The Fall of Retro
We all like it when things are flowing smoothly forward, of course.
But, think about how exhaustive that would be if it were constant, and without time to pause.
Let’s ponder the fall leaves as a symbol for a retrograde…
Fall is a time when the trees bring their energy inward.
As they do, they emit a stunning array of beautiful colors, perhaps a reflection of the awakening wisdom we find during these internal phases.
The leaf debris settles on the ground below, protecting the tree’s roots and the earthen creatures from the cold winter ice.
Then the leaves act as a compost, returning nutrients to the soil for the spring.
Nnnnggghh, I love a good metaphor. And this is a PSA to let your real leaves remain on the ground wherever appropriate.
Right now we have a slew of planets in retrograde, and I ask you to consider this as a good thing. Currently the planets in retrograde are: Saturn until 10/10, Jupiter until 10/17, Mercury until 10/18, and Neptune until 12/1.
Retrogrades move us inward and that gives us valuable perspective on what we can do better. They slow us down, so we can realign with our best trajectory. They offer us messages we need for our best growth next season.
Tarot offers the bright colors of the fall leaves. The cards display brilliant insights on matters that you normally don’t have time to witness fully. Take some time this month to enjoy both the trees and some illuminating cards in a reading for the benefit of the post-retrograde season.

How Archetypes Teach Us
Why are stories so powerful?
When we listen to a tale, we observe a situation while imagining what we might do in that experience.
Each of the characters become a part of us that we can relate to.
The Tyrant within us is overthrown by the Higher Self.
The Foolish Adventurer faces the consequences of ignoring wisdom of the Sage, but is redeemed in their long-term choices to persist in facing their demons.
Tarot is an opportunity to reflect on your own story from a slightly objective distance, with the support of a Reader who is hopefully compassionately honest about the roles you and others are playing in your plot line.
This week, choose a card and learn which archetypal aspect of yourself you want to lean into to explore more of your best self.

Let tarot Be Fun!
Tarocchi Cards began as a game in the 15th century. It only developed into a divination system hundreds of years later. So why not get playful with a game that is both relevant to learning the divine meanings of the cards, while also letting it be lighthearted fun. Scroll on for the game my friend and student Zoë made up with her pal on a rainy winter weekend.
People often think that you need to be gifted your first deck of cards. Hogwash! If you don’t have a deck yet, go out and buy the one that most speaks to you. To make it easier to learn, make sure the minor arcana cards (cups, pentacles, swords and wands) are also well-decorated with images that capture a moment in a story.
If you do get gifted a used deck, be sure to sage it and then put it back in order, with the Trumps on top. This helps reset or clear your deck to make it yours.

Tarot of the Holy Light
Huzzah!
The first week of the Renaissance Faire was a wonderful success, and had a healthy consistent breeze in the air to keep patrons safe in plague times.
In honor of the glories of antiquity, I share with you this week a continental-based modern deck, Tarot of the Holy Light. With meanings older than the widely known Waite-Smith deck, this was designed by scholars who collaged alchemical and astrological symbols into a vibrant work of art.

Remove the Monster From Tarot
Hello! Greetings! Salutations!
As a writer and English teacher, I love words and etymology. Once, I pondered the word “Demonstrate” and realized that it may have the word “Monster” in it. English is a mess of so many languages that my guesses are often wrong though. So I looked it up, and . . . huzzaahh . . .
From de- “entirely” (see de-) + monstrare “to point out, show,” from monstrum “divine omen, wonder” (see monster)

To show the monster . . . to teach . . . just that these words are related is delightful. To have ‘divine omen and wonder’ included only uplevels my glee.
To de-monster-ate is the act of entirely taking the monster out of.
So much about Tarot is misunderstood. It is up to those of us who love it to demonstrate the truths of it.
