What to Look for in a Tarot Deck
“Can I Buy My Own First Deck?”
I get this question a lot.
The Answer is a Resounding YES.
People want to add mystery and ritual to the tarot, so they have created this story that makes it seem more like a club that you need to know someone to get into.
Unless you’re already in a coven with a matriarch who is about to bequeath you with your first deck, please buy your own deck.
A tarot deck is a work of art that speaks to you, and it’s best if you choose it for yourself. Find one with images that draw you in and speak to you.
If your mind can wander across symbols and details as you gaze at each card, this will help you get into your elusive right bring as a reader.
A traditional Tarot deck has 78 cards in 5 suits that relate to the major arcana from Fool to the World, and minor arcana suits related to the 4 elements.
It’s fine if they threw in an extra beyond that, like the Happy Squirrel card (inspired by a Simpsons episode).
Check that the minor arcana (typically aligned as Cups, Swords, Pentacles and Wands) are all richly decorated with stories and symbols.
It’s a lot harder to interpret the meanings of a picture that just has 4 Swords on it, rather than a portrayal of a person resting peacefully.
While a used deck can be fine, it’s best to cleanse it before reading with it. Put all the cards in sequential order. Sage it. Interview it (learn more about this is my class). Make sure the cards resonate well in your hands and feel right to you.
If you are getting a new deck, please be sure to purchase your decks from the artist who made it or their publisher, and not a knock-off illegal reprint.

If the last few weeks have included relationship challenges, it’s time to take a breath of relief.
Then take note of the lessons that may have come through your life since December 19th.

A Tarot Activity for Winter Focus
When it’s cold and gray outside, how can we see it as a signal to find our own light within?
It’s easy to let winter be a droll time, and this year is extra hard with covid risks keeping us at more of a distance from seasonal house gatherings.
This is that essential moment to remember what we may romanticize about winter in the middle of a busy summer.
Sit for a moment and ponder what aspects of winter life you desire in the heat of summer.
Pull a 3-card tarot spread and consider which self-care techniques each card aligns with for you.
Here are some suggestions for nurturing activities related to each tarot suit.
Watery Cups: Fulfill your introvert by making time to draw, journal from the heart, and make arts and crafts. Feel the full spectrum of your emotional range and edge into uncomfortable places with an artsy foreign film.
Airy Swords: Get quiet focus as you pull out a puzzle, read a book, or learn a new skill. Crack open that workbook on internal growth that will make communications feel better in your relationships. Earthy Pentacles: Enjoy the slowing down enough to ground inward. Cook some nurturing food. Clean out a closet. Repot some plants. Organize that stuff you are tired of staring at. Reward yourself after with a mellow nature trip.
Firey Wands: Get outdoors for some socially-distanced physical activities. Stay inside and join a local ecstatic dance zoom session. Move your body. Call your friends. You can even start preparing for your performance piece you can debut when it’s hot out.
Major Arcana: Know that you are in a prime moment in your life’s trajectory. Get self-care that fits best with the archetype you pulled, and include a compassionate yet objective perspective on your current path by reaching out to me for an in-person reading.

Have you ever known something without knowing how you knew it?
When was the last time you felt an urge to call someone and they were in need of your presence?
We can choose to mystify these magical edges of life, or we can acknowledge our desire to normalize how often they occur.
When we walk toward our ability to know beyond logic, we get more control over when and how it comes through.
We listen more closely and make better choices in both small and big decisions.
We allow ease in tough moments, because we can inherently know we are acting from wisdom instead of reactivity.
I was not born with abnormal psychic gifts. My best friend growing up had strong abilities, and it scared her, but it fascinated me. I chose to study and build these skills.
Those who can do, and those can’t . . . learn to do . . . and then teach.
We can choose to engage with this natural ability. It’s about practice.
