Brave Your Emotions

Emotions can be uncomfortable and hard to lean into.

One morning, I woke up angry next to my then partner. It wasn’t even from a recent fight so much as an accumulation of frustrations.

I wanted to gather my things and leave and let myself be angry at him without discussion.

But, then it happened . . . the cat laid on me.

Obviously I now had no choice but to stay there and feel my anger.

While he slept next to me for the next hour, my anger was felt and slowly morphed into sadness.

When he woke up, I expressed my hurt from a place of sadness instead of anger. We had a much better conversation than if I had not spent that time feeling my grunk fully.

A lot of us are taught to “be strong” by dismissing feelings. It’s actually a stronger act to move through the discomfort by actually being present with it.

Take a moment to sit and focus on your heart right now.

What’s stirring in you today?

How can you bring it some tenderness and curiosity?

In Tarot, this is what the cups suit and court is all about. The heart is tethered to both emotions and spirituality.

Here are some ways to manage messy emotions:

Name the feeling without judgement

Give yourself permission to acknowledge what you’re feeling and recognize it as valid.

Notice what story is hidden behind this feeling

Look for the nuance to notice other emotions attached to that story.

Widen the field of experience to include all the parts.

Get curious about the hurt

Talk to that tender part of you with a kindness you deserve.

Ask yourself what this is trying to show you or teach you right now.

Use your body

Close your eyes and feel where in your body this feeling is happening for you right now.

Deeply experience the full sensation of it. Name what the physical feels like in descriptive adjectives.

Shake it Out

See if you can move your body in a way that lets that physical sensation shift.

Maybe put on a song to dance to or shake around or do some stretching. Release that.

Share it with others

Reach out to someone who is sympathetic and perhaps can relate to your messy heart. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone.

There’s a relief in being witnessed. Bring your emotions to your personal tarot reading with me.

I appreciate so much when people are able to let themselves express during a session. It feels healthy and I hope it rejuvenates their spirit.

Spend more time being curious about your somatic body with an intuition coaching session.
