Body Positivity Practices

It took me a long time to love my body.

We all know the reasons for this. Society has weird standards that our parents and friends sadly buy into.

Even if we do fit the “ideals”, most of us experience an aversion to the design of our corporeal earth suit in some way. No matter what shape you are, it’s easy to find judgment.

Today, I want to celebrate your shape and mine, and share some of the ways that I embraced my own short and bootyful bounty.

When the negative thoughts creep in, I have learned to counter it with positive mantras about my body.

I also sometimes go through a gratitude practice: thanking each part of my body that I can name.

The first big shift in this journey of self-love though came from finding yoga.

Attuning to my body, mind, and spirit simultaneously helped alter my relationship to me.

With Yoga, I witness my abilities to become strong and capable while also aligning with the subtle sensations of energetic resonance that is also a part of this physical form.

I am excited to share with you Portlanders that I am now teaching yoga at a new center in Southeast!

The Classical Ballet Academy is an inclusive, body-loving dance center that just moved to 5516 SE Foster Rd.

Tuesdays at 9am is Hatha Yoga for all levels to get an energizing stretch

Starting in November, Wednesday at 7:15pm is Yin Yoga to decompress with a relaxed stretch of the joints

If you aren’t local and would like to do Zoom Yoga with me, please reach out and let me know and I can get that going this winter.

Yoga led me to seek out opportunities to dance, which helped me fall more in love with how my body moves energy. Dance is also proven to be one of the best ways to counter dementia.

Another resource that helps me is when I find media that cherishes people of all shapes and sizes

That’s why I was so excited that Reese Marren at the Curated Card has put out the World of Hilda Tarot Deck, based on the stocky pin up girl of the 1950’s by Duane Bryers (who is adorably shaped like me).
