Dedicated to Frivolity

When you hear the word “Committed”, what areas of effort come to mind?

These seem like the obvious answers:
Relationships / Marriage / Family
Success in a Career
Health and Diets and Workouts

I admit that I thought about this subject this week because I am starting a 3 month effort towards a health goal.

But this got me thinking about how many things we dedicate ourselves to that are not so heavy.

You can commit to watching all the seasons of a TV show. There were multiple episodes of Succession that I had to drudge through, but I made it to the end. I was dedicated.

People who set their sites on Burning Man know that it takes a lot of will power to do all the things to be self-reliant on the playa. Hot Tip: the best time to buy tickets is in July when many crumble like dust in the wind.

We assert our will power often on things that are not about serious gains. We simply approach these from a different energy. It almost seems like this casual angle might empower us more.

Time is varied in our less obvious goals as well.
You might make a weekly effort, as I set the intention to get this newsletter out with consistency.
Perhaps it’s a daily journal practice.
It could be deciding to always have protein bars in a reachable spot in the car to hand out to homeless people whenever the opportunity arises.

What is one casual thing you have achieved without really thinking about it as a commitment?

What is something silly that you have owned fully?

How do you feel about this effort and how you approached it?

Today you can consider: What playfulness am I committing to for this Spring and Summer?

How do you want to take this ability to make nonsense happen organically and apply it to your own joy?

What is something that makes you lights up that you can let yourself focus on this season?

There is a power in bringing absurdity to heaviness, much like an inflatable frog or a musician in a banana costume might be standing up for a very real cause.

With this lightness in mind, is there a way to approach a less fun goal from a place of the joy it will bring you someday?

“Mmm, I am so excited to fill out this tax receipts spreadsheet so I can feel the satisfaction of turning it in and be done with it! Yum!”
