Navigate to your best life
I set an intention to make September about health, and I admit that it’s been a wonky start.
This week, the news feed pulled me in and I might need to log out to gain control over my wide-eyed fascination.
Yes, it is important to know what is happening in the world.
Remember though that there used to be one newspaper per day that people would read, or one news program at night.
We might have discussed details with friends and neighbors face-to-face at some point.
We did not have constant updates and ways to debate the issue with strangers or people we met once at a party in 2013.
Ask yourself: What time(s) of day is ideal for my brain to take in what is happening in the world? Can I limit myself to these hours?
Even if it’s not about news, I find myself hunting on YouTube for videos to add to my watch later collection.
The algorithm figures out what catches my attention and it’s rarely the quality of the philosophical talks that actually fulfill my mind.
I have learned to take the step to mark unhealthy videos as ‘Not Interested’ from the 3 dots on the upper right corner. No more pimple popping fixations please!
Control more of your own Feed: Mark unwanted videos as unwanted. Don’t worry, if you search for it in the future it will return. Then you can rinse and repeat.
If you can be impulsive then it’s all the more important to replace the habit of follow through when you want to grab your phone for answers too quickly.
Take a moment to pause and reflect and take a moment before automatic answers. This will train your brain to do so more naturally in general. Our brains are very good at repeating the habits we create.
Train your Speed: Slow down and consider the urgency of this desire for an immediate answer. Take 3 breaths before opening the website. Teach your brain to wait, and it will become habit more easily.
I realize that a lot of my old hobbies have been replaced with the smart phone options.
I used to draw and journal more often. I forget that I can do a quick doodle as easily as I can distract on my phone. And it’s much healthier for my brain.
One dance song (granted, it might include your phone to play it) is enough to enhance your day. And far more fun and fulfilling than social media doom scrolling.
