Triple Goddess Symbol Revealed

One of my favorite people and deck creator of the Disassembled Tarot, Jennifer Steidley, invited me to have a chat with her on an instagram live this week about the Triple Goddess symbol.

Here are some highlights to consider the next time you see this symbol on a shirt, a tattoo, jewelry, or hanging from the wall of a New Age shop.

The triple goddess symbol represents the three phases of life through the feminine divine. Maiden is the waxing moon, Mother is the full moon, and Crone is the waning moon.

I prefer to call this Maiden, Mother, Matriarch, because alliteration is pretty and I don’t know many women who want to be called a crone these days.

Maiden begins from menarche, and Matriarch begins at menopause.

The Mother phase may begin when you have a child. I have personally chosen instead to nurture my community and have raised a few roommates into being chore-capable adults. Maternal instincts are still alive and well in those of us who do not bear or adopt formally.

This symbol was first noted by the writer Robert Graves in regards to European mythology. Persephone is the Maiden who brings us Springtime; Diana as the full moon huntress Mother, and Hecate is the underworld Matriarch.

However, the triple goddess goes back as far as Egypt with Isis, Nephthys, and Hathor representing motherhood, death and love.

Hindu Shaktism has the tridevi of Saraswati (Creativity), Lakshmi (Sustainer / Abundance), and Parvati (destroyer of ego) representing the Mahadevi, or mother goddess.

This can be found in many mythos. The Moirai fates were made up of three female dieties. Clothos spun the thread of your life, Lachesis distributed, and Atropos cut the thread of fate.

The Norns of Nordic mythology were feminine deities of past, present, and future.

The Zorya of Slavic myth presented celestial goddesses of dawn, dusk, and midnight.

Often, a single goddess represents all three elements.

The Morrígan is a Celtic War Goddess who acts as war, death and fate.

Hecate often was presented with three bodies or faces.

Freja can be see and love, war, and the afterlife. Friday is named after this goddess and is considered a day to connect with her energy.

To honor the triple goddess today, I welcome you to do a simple and short meditation for as long as you like.

Sit quietly and empty your lungs just until you crave a breath.

As you inhale, welcome in the sense of beginning with the maiden.

Hold the breath, imagine how the oxygen enters and nourishes your body.

Exhale with gratitude for that which has served your life force. Remember you are releasing all the CO2 and old energy you no longer need.

Do this for as little as 3 breaths, or perhaps set a timer and do this for 3 minutes. Allow this break to help you ponder on the cycles of life with acceptance and grace.

If this felt good for you, make it a Friday ritual.
