Imbolc Rituals: Welcome in the Light

Happy Imbolc!
We are at the halfway point between Winter and Spring. While Groundhog’s day is a US tradition that has only been celebrated since 1887, there is ample evidence that the Neolithic Celtic people marked this point in their calendars with rituals up to 6,000 years ago.

Imbolc was renamed St. Brigid’s day in the medieval times when the Catholic church essentially included the Celtic goddess in their own pantheon.

Traditionally Brigid is associated with the light of fire and the cleansing nature of water and brings us blessings of health and fertility.

Here are some ways to celebrate Imbolc:

Light a candle or burn incense to celebrate the brightening of the sun and call in what light you want to welcome into your life over the second half of winter.

Clean your home to make room for blessings.

Begin planning what you want to plant in the garden, perhaps even begin some starts inside that you can transplant as the world gets warmer in the months ahead.

Welcome Brigid into your home with a fire in the hearth or a bonfire in a pit outdoors where you can bathe in the smoke as the ancestors did.

Walk clockwise around a fire pit or a well or a pond to ask for blessings in health.

Treat yourself to a purifying bath where you let go of the old and welcome in the new and say a blessing to Brigid.

Tie a piece of cloth around a tree to honor Brigid.

Divination is a part of the traditional rituals and you can learn how to read cards yourself with me this winter.
