Creating Real Connection is Messy

I love when I hear back from those of you reading this.
It reminds me that this is an act of building community.

Since Venus Retrograde began, we’ve looked at Dating and Family.

Today, I want to talk about Community.

How do we create more connection between us?

How do we turn acquaintances into close friends?

How do we become comfortable with the uncomfortable that this can involve?

One of my favorite descriptions of this process comes from Tuckman’s Model of Team Dynamics.

This model says we create community teams over these phases:

Forming: Meet and put on our friendly faces without much sense of what role we play with each other

Storming: The kitten gloves come off and we allow each other to see our shadows

Norming: We make peace and figure each other out enough to know how to interact authentically and in more clear roles

Performing: We focus on supporting the group and trust one another enough to get tasks done together

Adjourning: this focuses on how to wrap up and debrief effectively in work environment teams

As a person who wants to build community, I love thinking about interactions through this lens.

Building a tight, trustworthy community comes through Storms.

We have to get past the part where we put forward our best face and speak up for ourselves.

To create community, we have to get real with our needs and listen to other’s needs.

This discomfort can feel like failure as we get to know new people, but it’s actually a sign of moving toward real thriving.

Think for a moment of the people in your life who have locked into phase one of Forming.
It’s good to have acquaintances to laugh with at parties and have loose power dynamics with. They’re lovely, ‘fluffy friends’.

But consider those people who went through the awkward puberty of Storming for a spell, only to come out the other side ready to build something stronger with you.

Those are the people you call when you are angry or despondent.

Those are the people who you could start a business with someday.
Or not, because you know their reliability levels, and love them anyhow.

Venus Retrograde is likely going to bring some tests of our relations that shines light on our roles and expectations for each other.

Remember that we can thrive more functionally after we have seen the truth of things more clearly.
