Trials Bring Us Closer

Last weekend, you may have heard that Burning Man became a muddy mess.

In the same moment, the large camp out event I was enjoying also faced a crisis as multiple people got food poisoning.

In both situations, the community rallied to support each other.

Despite the news touting a disaster in Black Rock City, my friends returning from Burning Man this week are saying it was their best year ever. The challenge bonded them.

My fellow camp mates also shared how much it meant for them to witness their friends show up 100% for the people who were taken ill. Even the people who got sick said they were moved by feeling so held.

We spend a lot of time and energy guarding ourselves against these types of challenges. We worry about whether things going wrong will lead to collapse.

This week, I also watched the horror movie The Mist. In this fictionalized story, a group of people trapped in a grocery store fail to work in unity to the point of murdering each other.

That is the type of story that we hear the most through media.

From this mindset, Chris Rock hitchhiked out of Burning Man, joking that it would turn to cannibalism. I understand where he sourced this fear, and I hope he saw later that he missed out on an opportunity to alter this anxiety and build connection.

The stories we tell have a profound effect on our expectations of ourselves and others.

When we actually observe the people around us, instead of what the media shines it’s light on, we might find that people are generally better than we presume.

Today, consider a moment where crisis struck and you saw people show up. Hold that in your heart. Notice where your fears are being fed fiction.

One of the reasons I love my work is that it lets me show up with total presence for people and shine a light on benefits and positive potentials for their future.

What are your 5 Core Values?

Sometimes I run around doing a million tasks, few of which serve my highest purpose.

How we spend our time reflects what we place value on.

This can be seasonal.

In the summer, my values for community and nature are going to stampede my higher purpose of writing my book, which fits under my values of education and legacy.

Today, sit with the list of values below from Brene Brown and write down the ones that strike your spirit with the values that you want to lean into through the rest of this year.

Narrow them down. Perhaps even categorize them according to relationships, work, and self-care.

As the season of Venus Retrograde ends, we can be more aware of how our inherent values have been reflected in our relationships over the last month.

Were you able to hold your truth through any conflicts that may have arisen?

How would you like to approach interpersonal challenges from your higher self even more effectively in the future?

Then consider how you can align more of your time and efforts to engage with these values.

My Favorite Life Organizing Apps

We all do a lot.

I work a lot,
play a lot,
help a lot,
socialize a lot,
cook a lot,
clean up a lot,
and juggle these lots, which is a task in itself.

I am guessing you likely do, too.

This Mercury Retrograde in Virgo is a great time to bring order into your life and your closets that are feeling unkempt.

I have tested countless apps for to-do lists and these are the ones I have found the most helpful. The lists are both on your phone and online with all three of these.

I gain no income from these recommendations, I just want to share what helps me with others.

Apps that Help Me Organize my Life and Why I Love Them:

Todoist: Daily Needs in Order!
Split your tasks into projects (Up to 5 categories in the free level).
Within the project, you can have other headers with subtasks.
Repeat a task on a schedule and set reminders and deadlines.
Move tasks up and down in priority.

To Do (Microsoft): The Big Picture in one place!

Previously a German app called Wunderlist (I liked it better then).
This is useful for ideas and projects that are less immediate, but need done someday.
No limit on how many lists in the free app. I include lists of books I want to read and recipes I want to cook.
Drop multiple lists into a folder.
Share a list with a friend or colleague or contractor.

Google Keep: Post its for random everything!
If my brain is spinning on an idea or even an aggravation that I want to get out of my head, I will open a new note and drop my thoughts there so I can walk away fresh.
You can make it a list, a photo, a drawing, a written message, or an audio recording.
Pin important notes and assign them a color to make it pretty.

I hope this helps you find support to keep your busy life in order.

I would love to help you organize your experience of managing your life in another way when you sign up for a tarot reading today.

Embrace Easy Self-Care this Month

Whenever someone would set a boundary or ask for a need around my dearly departed friend Ali Mitchell, he’d respond,“Self Care is Sexy!”.

It was his simple act of defiance against the programming that say our needs make us needy.

I’m no astrologer, but with Mercury going retrograde during the last chunk of Venus Retrograde while we switch into Virgo, it’s clear we will want to be extra kind to ourselves for the rest of the month.

I collect Virgo women as friends. I adore their grounded no-nonsense and nurturing natures and we laugh together endlessly.

But . . . we share in the habit of being overly self-critical. The Virgos I know often struggle to prioritize the tenderness for themselves that they are so good at giving loved ones.

For the rest of August, consider how you can soften the voices that crisply judge your heart.

When ads market the idea of self-care, it’s often these large efforts of luxurious bath time or nature walks. Although great ideas, I personally struggle to make time for such epic acts of self-love.

I want to offer some tiny ways that you can wiggle self-love into the moments you have to spare.

Mini-breaks to Feel your Feels: Your phone has a clock app. It has a timer setting. You can set it to ring a reminder every hour or two to pause and breathe into your heart for a self check-in. Observe where you’re at and be present before you hustle back into the flow of life.

Soundtrack Your Days: After two music festivals this summer, I am reunited with my desire to have music flowing through my background brain.

Right now, I am letting my app stream me the strings of The Piano Guys. If it’s not the right vibe, I hit skip. If I’m not writing, I might choose something with positive lyrics to singalong to like the soft mantras of Alexa Sunshine Rose.

Swap Out TV for Enriching Downtime: Is there a hobby or art that fills you up? Do you crave more nature? Is a book you’re enjoying gathering dust? Make a list of activities that fill your cup. Before you pick up the remote, consider other options. If your favorite program is mostly good writing, or you desire a new podcast episode, let it play in the background as you paint some rocks.

Ease Tensions with Talk strategies

I don’t know about you, but I sure am having a lot of relevant breakthrough conversations this week.

In our monthly theme of Venus Retrograde, it seems that conflicts of old are coming to the surface all around.

Luckily, I have spent lots of dollars couple’s therapy sessions which have offered me key strategies to engage in uncomfortable topics with people I care about.

Last week, I spoke about Tuckman’s model of group development, which includes the essential phase of Storming.

This week, I want to give some ideas of how to get the best results from this uncomfortable stage.

I know it isn’t easy. I am definitely not perfect at these skills, but I know they work.

Remember that this is for your own benefit of gaining insight and getting to a place of peace.

Here are some keys the castle of healthy communication:

Active Listening: Even if you disagree with what they are saying, let them speak as you listen. Do your best to give open body language with eye contact to show you’re tuned in.

If this seems impossible, or they cannot reciprocate, set a short timer during which each of you gets to say your peace without interruption.

Paraphrase: They only healthy interruption is for clarity. It’s incredible how easy it is to feel heard when someone reflects back what you are saying, word for word, or close to it.

“I’m feeling like you don’t want me around when your kids are here.”

“I’m hearing you say that you feel unwanted in family time.”

Or, when you ask probing or open-ended questions to learn more about what someone experienced:

“What did that bring up for you emotionally?”

Minimal Encouragers: Non-verbal sounds of empathy are powerful medicine. “Mmmm-hmmm”, “Ahhhh”, and “Uh huh” are surprisingly supportive at building trust with someone sharing vulnerability.

As the name implies, these are the minimum that we can give to show empathy. Even if you disagree, you can supply these soft sounds to resonate consideration for what they are experiencing.

While you might already know these well, it’s a good reminder to step into your best self to create healing with those who you differ with.

We each have our own unique lens that we interpret life through, and it’s always worthwhile to see things through someone else’s glasses.

If you want to update your life lens prescription, sign up for a tarot reading today to see what angle the cards suggest you take.

Creating Real Connection is Messy

I love when I hear back from those of you reading this.
It reminds me that this is an act of building community.

Since Venus Retrograde began, we’ve looked at Dating and Family.

Today, I want to talk about Community.

How do we create more connection between us?

How do we turn acquaintances into close friends?

How do we become comfortable with the uncomfortable that this can involve?

One of my favorite descriptions of this process comes from Tuckman’s Model of Team Dynamics.

This model says we create community teams over these phases:

Forming: Meet and put on our friendly faces without much sense of what role we play with each other

Storming: The kitten gloves come off and we allow each other to see our shadows

Norming: We make peace and figure each other out enough to know how to interact authentically and in more clear roles

Performing: We focus on supporting the group and trust one another enough to get tasks done together

Adjourning: this focuses on how to wrap up and debrief effectively in work environment teams

As a person who wants to build community, I love thinking about interactions through this lens.

Building a tight, trustworthy community comes through Storms.

We have to get past the part where we put forward our best face and speak up for ourselves.

To create community, we have to get real with our needs and listen to other’s needs.

This discomfort can feel like failure as we get to know new people, but it’s actually a sign of moving toward real thriving.

Think for a moment of the people in your life who have locked into phase one of Forming.
It’s good to have acquaintances to laugh with at parties and have loose power dynamics with. They’re lovely, ‘fluffy friends’.

But consider those people who went through the awkward puberty of Storming for a spell, only to come out the other side ready to build something stronger with you.

Those are the people you call when you are angry or despondent.

Those are the people who you could start a business with someday.
Or not, because you know their reliability levels, and love them anyhow.

Venus Retrograde is likely going to bring some tests of our relations that shines light on our roles and expectations for each other.

Remember that we can thrive more functionally after we have seen the truth of things more clearly.

Make the most of this month’s astrology and sign up for a tarot reading today to discuss your various roles in your own community.

The Familiar is Strange

I have spent the last few days with my folks.

As always, my experience brings to mind a quote from Ram Dass:

“If you think you are enlightened, try spending a week with your family.”

It’s funny how hard it is to be your highest self around those closest to you, but my parents and I are all doing well enough this round.

We’ve been kind.
We have kept political discussions minimal.
We each put in effort.
We’ve all said ‘I’m sorry‘ after blow outs.

For Venus Retrograde, I want to talk a bit generally about family through the lens of tarot.
If family is a tough subject for you or holds deep trauma, I send you heartfelt compassion and welcome you to skip this week’s suggested activity below.

It’s a unique challenge to be related to others.

Family can reflect the parts of us that we gloss over with society.
They mirror cycles of patterns we know better than to get caught in,
but here we are slipping and sliding right toward them again.
They are our Tower Card and 3 of Swords, constantly giving us lessons in growth and identity we still need to own.

In the ways that we dearly cherish them, there is a preciousness that is incomparable.
There’s often a love full of nostalgia and hope.
They can inspire an expanse of varied emotions, rampant with ambiguity that pulls us different directions.
They are our Lovers Card of sacred connection and our 10 of Cups of all the feels.

Even when we did not grow up with our lineage, there’s still inherent connections to our identities.
One of my closest friends recently found her biological dad’s family.
They share quirky alignments in their adventurous spirit, a mutual love of water sports, and shared hobbies of caring for birds.

Our family holds the Hierophant of our DNA with the traditions set in the 10 of Pentacles.

This week, in line with the potential insights of Venus Retrograde, take a moment to write a bit about the family you grew up with.

What characteristics seem consistent across various individuals, including yourself, in your family of origin?

How do you reflect these traits and how do you feel about them in yourself?

Where do you seem to diverge from the norms in your family?

Was this in reaction to their behavior, or was it something that just seemed to come from your own intrinsic nature?

How would you like to nurture the healthy similarities and differences to your family in your own spiritual growth?

Let divination shine a unique lens on these archetypes when you  sign up for a tarot reading today.

Embrace Spiritual Growth in Dating and Relating

This week, Venus goes retrograde until September 3rd.

While this might throw off our usual desires, both creative and inter-relational, it also will give us fresh perspective on who and what we truly want now that is different from before.

I have been actively dating for about a year since my 10 year relationship ended at the very start of 2022. It’s like a strange part-time job.

My current approach is different than the norm, and is a good angle to take for this Venus retrograde.

Rather than hunting for “the one”, I am experiencing each person I meet as a tarot card to learn from.

Who am I with the athlete? Do shadows come up for me about my physical ability when I hike with them?

Who am I with the awkward intellectual? Can I enjoy their brain without getting empathically anxious myself?

Each new interaction is a chance to engage with witnessing myself mindfully.

This is helping the most in the area of attachment theory, which designates each of us as a mix of Secure, Anxious, or Avoidant.

When I get insecure in relationships, I can lean into anxiety spin outs.

‘Did I text them back too quickly? Should I have said that? Why haven’t they responded?”

Naturally, my pattern is to be the most enchanted by avoidant dismissives who reflect the familiar and trigger these tailspins.

My current goal is simply to observe how I can lean into my Secure side.

How can I calm this part of me when my nerves flair?

How can I communicate my vulnerability without overwhelming the other person?

How can I sit with the discomfort of desire for more?

It isn’t easy, but I want the benefits of these challenges to be worth the discomfort.

Whether you are single or partnered, this month ahead is a good time to get mindful with observing who you are in relations and how you want to be different.

Slow down. Get curious. Lean into positive shifts.

To get a fresh perspective on your own relationship approach, sign up for a tarot reading today.

Venus rules relationships, values, money, beauty, and love. Observe that these fields might find new ways of being over the next month.

Then emerge in September better than ever after you tune into how you want to grow.

What’s in Your Stars?

It’s my birthday week!

I have enjoyed astrology since I was a kid, and I want to gift you three awesome resources who help me be attentive to the bigger picture as I flow through my days. (No paid promotions here, just sharing my joy.) Scroll to the bold for these if you want to skip my humorous tale.

When I was a pre-teen, I loved Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs and other Astro guides.

As I would read the description of Cancer, I would get bummed. It was all about being a sensitive homebody who would sentimentalize just about anything.

Sure this was all true. And yes, I would get insanely giddy for a solid trip to the stationary store or the arrival of my Premiere Magazine. But it sure didn’t sound cool.

Of course, Leo came next in the line up. These folks were the life of the party. They were feisty and fun and vibrant.

I felt jealous and sad to be relegated to my milquetoast crab character.

As an adult, I went to some actual astrologers.

Each time, the first thing they said to me was, “Yeah, you’re basically more of a Leo than anything.”

Huzzah! My pre-teen desires have been fulfilled by expanding into the bigger picture of my full chart!

That said, through my work as a tarot reader and intuition coach, I have come to embrace and love my sensitive Cancerian side. This is the part of me that is compassionate and empathic.

The Leo parts help me to be brazen enough to speak with confidence and send out marketing emails like this.

My Aquarius rising helps me integrate the spread of card archetypes into new meanings.

My Gemini planets help keep it real with logic.

It’s super helpful to know all the flavors of your own astrological spectrum.

If you want to know your own full chart, check out this awesome German-based site that doesn’t charge you anything: Astro.com

For classic horoscopes, I love the humor and open-hearted horoscopes of fellow Cancerian, Rob Brezsny.

As an intuition coach, I have been fascinated by the spot on overviews of Molly McCord’s podcast, Intuitive Astrology with Molly McCord, available on most podcast apps.

The reason I like astrology is because it widens out my view of what is happening that might be affecting my personal realm. But I still do prefer a tarot reading to get directly personal insights.

The Magic of Masks and Creative Play

This week, I will be parading around in an outfit covered in eyeballs, surrounded by about 20 people in their own eyeball outfits.

I love getting into costumes and characters. This form of play has offered me enormous lessons about both humans and my Self (the Jungian Big S version).

In 2014, I went to the Oregon Country Fair as a part of a costume troupe called Risk of Change that brings parades and ambiance entertainment to the event. Started in the mid-80’s by a group of gay men aligned with the Radical Faeries, it integrates sacred rituals into playful ridiculousness.

In only 3 days, we wear about a dozen different outfits that we prepare ahead. It is no small task to accomplish.

This is what the typical day looks like at fair:

We wake up early and perhaps dress as a gaggle of gnomes to greet at the entry and parade.
We then dress the public up in rainbow or black and white regalia for an afternoon parade.
Then we might slip into body suits and go out as a barrel of monkeys who dosey-doe with the public.
Finally, we help sweep the public off site, sometimes as a group of eerie Victorian crows, remaining totally silent in black Venetian masks while fabulously freaking people out.

Even when scary, we try to foster interaction. It’s always fun to see how we can ingratiate humans to play with us, even when we look intimidating.

Every human is artistic when they allow themselves to be brave and risk embarrassment through play.

Building a troll mask also taught me a lot about the creative process. It took close to 40 hours of paper mache and painting.

I had a concept around this character’s love of snails, but I didn’t know who she would be. It’s a lot of work to do without really knowing where you’re going.

As soon as I put on that mask, a persona emerged who is of me, but isn’t a part I normally express. She has a light, whispery voice. Unlike her boisterous brethren, she has a very gentle nature. She still harasses the public by insisting on smearing ‘snail trail’ onto their sun kissed skin (a ‘potion’ made of clear aloe vera), but she’s not as rough and gruff as one would expect from a troll.

My gnome, Oomph Von Ploomph, is closer to my nature, but then, we’re both Germans (my mom is from Berlin).

This year, I came up with the idea of Superhero Wrestling, but then I couldn’t think of my character. A voice said to me, ‘find the outfit first’.

So I dug into my closet and tried on different things, and it seems that I might become a Swamp Siren of some sort. She’s still a work in progress and the fair is just about to begin, but the creative spirit will come through with a completed piece. Or, I will make a fool of myself. But that’s the risk we take when we push outside our norms.

This great effort has shown me layers of myself that I didn’t know belonged to me.

Pretend is wonderful way to find out who we are.

Channeling a character outside your norm reveals things you want to say or express that would not come so freely.

Wearing an unfamiliar mask brings to light the masks we unintentionally wear to function in society.

This gives us the choice to shift our personality more toward who we want to be more of in life.

You can access this yourself by finding a puppet or a mask and interacting with a friend who knows your usual self.

If you want to talk about the masks you wear, reach out for a tarot reading.

If you’re at the fair this weekend and want to join the fun, come to Energy Park at 2pm, ask for Puppetland (to the right of the stage) and we will dress you up and take you out on a parade at 3pm.

Scroll down for photos of my troupe from previous years!

And please . . . meet my alter-ego, Gary the Unigoat!
