Navigate to your best life
Whenever someone would set a boundary or ask for a need around my dearly departed friend Ali Mitchell, he’d respond,“Self Care is Sexy!”.
It was his simple act of defiance against the programming that say our needs make us needy.
I’m no astrologer, but with Mercury going retrograde during the last chunk of Venus Retrograde while we switch into Virgo, it’s clear we will want to be extra kind to ourselves for the rest of the month.
I collect Virgo women as friends. I adore their grounded no-nonsense and nurturing natures and we laugh together endlessly.
But . . . we share in the habit of being overly self-critical. The Virgos I know often struggle to prioritize the tenderness for themselves that they are so good at giving loved ones.
For the rest of August, consider how you can soften the voices that crisply judge your heart.
When ads market the idea of self-care, it’s often these large efforts of luxurious bath time or nature walks. Although great ideas, I personally struggle to make time for such epic acts of self-love.
I want to offer some tiny ways that you can wiggle self-love into the moments you have to spare.
Mini-breaks to Feel your Feels: Your phone has a clock app. It has a timer setting. You can set it to ring a reminder every hour or two to pause and breathe into your heart for a self check-in. Observe where you’re at and be present before you hustle back into the flow of life.
Soundtrack Your Days: After two music festivals this summer, I am reunited with my desire to have music flowing through my background brain.
Right now, I am letting my app stream me the strings of The Piano Guys. If it’s not the right vibe, I hit skip. If I’m not writing, I might choose something with positive lyrics to singalong to like the soft mantras of Alexa Sunshine Rose.
Swap Out TV for Enriching Downtime: Is there a hobby or art that fills you up? Do you crave more nature? Is a book you’re enjoying gathering dust? Make a list of activities that fill your cup. Before you pick up the remote, consider other options. If your favorite program is mostly good writing, or you desire a new podcast episode, let it play in the background as you paint some rocks.
